This tutorial teaches you how to begin page numbering on any page after the second page in a document in Microsoft Office Word 2007.
To begin page numbering on the first page of a document is a simple matter. Click on the Page Number button in the Insert ribbon and select one of the various options. Then, to start the numbering on the second page, click the Different First Page box that appears on the Header and Footer > Design ribbon.
But starting the numbering after the second page is not as simple and, surprisingly, is not a task that readily presents itself to a Microsoft Office Word 2007 user.
Why exactly would you want to begin page numbering after the second page? Perhaps you have a title page plus a table of contents or a number of other front matter pages. Or there may be some unique reason specific to your document.
One way around this is to create two documents: one with the pages that won't be numbered, and one with the pages that will be numbered. However, this is a needless and awkward fix that creates extra clutter and makes it more difficult to organize your documents.
It is much easier to follow this tutorial and learn how to start the page numbering exactly where you want in a document.
To complete this tutorial, you need:
- Microsoft Office Word 2007
- Microsoft Windows operating system
- Create Two Sections in Your Document
- Insert Page Numbers
Create Two Sections in Your Document
To create two sections in your document:
1. Click the View tab.
2. Click the Print Layout button in the View ribbon.

Note: If the Print Layout button is already highlighted, do not click it.
3. Place your cursor at the end of the page that precedes the page on which you want the numbering to begin.

Note: For example, if you want the page numbering to begin on the fourth page of the document, place your cursor at the end of the third page.
4. Click the Page Layout tab.

5. Click the Breaks button in the Page Layout ribbon.

6. Click Continuous from the Breaks drop down menu that appears.
Result: Your cursor now appears at the beginning of the page on which you want the page numbering to begin.

You have successfully created two sections in your document. Now, let's get those page numbers inserted.
Insert Page Numbers
To insert page numbers:
1. Click the Insert tab.

2. Click the Header or Footer button in the Insert ribbon.

Note: This is a personal choice based on whether you want page numbers to appear at the top of the page (header) or at the bottom of the page (footer). This tutorial uses the footer.
3. Click Edit Footer from the drop down menu that appears.

4. Click the Link to Previous button that appears in the Header and Footer > Design ribbon.

Note: The goal is to ensure that the Link to Previous button is disabled, in other words, not highlighted. If the button is already not highlighted, do not click it.
5. Click the Page Number button in the Header and Footer > Design ribbon.

6. Click Format Page Numbers from the drop down menu that appears.

Result: the Page Format window opens.
7. Click the Start at: radio button, indicate at which number you want the numbering to start, and click the OK button.

8. Click the Page Number button.

9. Click the Bottom of Page option from the drop down menu and the specific style of numbering you desire.

Note: If you chose to put the page numbers in the header, click the Top of Page option.
And there you have it: page numbering that starts on any page after the second page!

Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! This was great, you saved my day!
A very clear guide and most importantly...it actually works compared to the god knows how many others I've tried.
Thumbs up for you!
thanks a lot..
works well.. great step by step tutorial..
Thank you so much! I´ve spent many late nights trying to figure out this problem, and now you have solved it for me! Very helpful and clear tutorial!
Thank you sooo much! The instructions were very easy to follow with the pictures. Thanks for the help!

Thank you sooooo much!!! muchas gracias!! grazie mille!!! bedankt!! merci!! danke!!
Hey there.. um.. THANK YOUU!! x)
thank you! I thought I might be stupid or something, not being able to do it using the 'user-friendly' icons they have there. glad it's not me, lol.
Thanks man, helped out a lot..like other, have spent many a night trying to figure this out
Great help. Thank you. Other sites are very confusing. Perhaps you should add at the end to click on 'Close Header Footer'
thanks, seems that you saved my day too.
thank you so much! i have so struggled with this. you're a life saver! Polly
Brilliant stuff, really helpful
However I do have the problem in which I don't know how to make the footer - section 1 not be showing the page numbers :(
excellent tips...
it is great becoz it save my time.......Time is very important :)
Thanks buddy
thats amazing. thank you so much..
Yikes... am I cursed? It didn't work for me. I tried to start numbering on page five, but 1-4 still have numbers no matter what.
Anonymous,
If you send me you document by attachment in an e-mail, I will see if I can sort it out (see e-mail address on front page of Tefl Spin).
Thank you,I will adjust my will accordingly.
THANK YOU SOOOOOO MUCH!!!
Still puts page number on first page just starts it over again at break. Why would Microsoft make it so retartdly hard to do a simple thing?
thank you!
Thanks, this was very helpful
Okay, this is the best tutotrial I've seen on this. Honestly, everyone that I've ever seen does not compare to this. Thank you very very much.
How do I prevent the first page (cover) from being included in the total number of pages? The last page footer should say "13 of 13", not "13 of 14".
WOW - Thanks a million!!!!!
GENUIS!
AMAZING TUTORIAL, YOU'RE A LEGEND!
Doesn't work for me. If I follow your instructions, I'll only get page number on that one specific page (say page 8), all the pages before AND after are without numbers, and I can't add page number to any of the following pages - the button is grayed out. What should I do?
Great Tutorial...
Thankz for this!
:)
Many thanks. I've been looking for this everywhere. Stumbled on this by coincidence. :D
To the poster above who indicated that he hasn't had any success: it's impossible to say without looking at the document. You might have other breaks in the document that are causing the problem.
Fantastic! I never in a million years would have figured that out on my own. Thank you!!
Thank you.
And Thank you.
That was Great
Dude, I am an IT guy, but formatting word kills me. You saved my A$$ with this guide!
Thanks so much. So helpful
Excellent Work.. Well Drafted
thank you..good job..
this is really helpful..
Great. Exactly what I wanted to do. Thank you!
Great... this what I need to do...
thanks a ton for your valuable post
Thanks so very much, it didn't work immediately, but then it after seeing what was wrong it's all good
Thanks :P
Thank you, that was very helpful. It worked perfectly.
This doesn't work. If you try to add this to a ready document, it will only indicate that page as page number 1 and will ignore all the rest of the pages and their numbers, it will only work if you add pages after, which is really frustratingly silly. I wish there was an easier way of doing this in MS Word.
Thanks a lot !!! :)
This is outstanding! I had the same problem as the person above in that my document only added page one, but when I went to the footer on the next page it suddenly appeared. No idea why or how, but it worked!
Nice one author but that was quite easier than your intro....ha ha!
Thanks man. Good Job, Well done.
Works perfectly! Thank you! XOXOXO
Thank You this really saves my time
This does not seem to work for me. The new numbering does start on the page section I selected, but I also get page numbers in the cover page.
For example:
Cover page p.1 ***
Index p.2 ***
First page p.1
Second page p.2
If I try to remove or suppress the page numbers on the cover page, I lose them all from the document.
FAIL
Ah ok, so I forgot to unselect the "link to previous section" option. Seems to be working now.
Thanks
thanks!!!! Big help for the big question mark i had! :)
thank you very much
Very useful !
thanks Man... very useful
Ver useful....... Thanks a lot
Thanks yar
I am so glad to have found this page. I have been struggling since yesterday evening in getting a 300-page document numbered properly. It is really outrageous that numbering pages in Word is made so difficult! The Internet is flooded with users who are having these problems. The software designers should be hung for things like this.
This did not help me at all... Microsoft Office word is just ridiculous... a two year old could foresee that this would be a problem in the future and as such equip the program with an easier way to handle this...
Top work
I am a die hard Wordperfect user and switching to Word 7 was the worst thing. Let the people who actually use these programs have a say. Another complaint is no reveal codes.
THANK YOU SO MUCH!! I am trying to finish my thesis and just as you mentioned, i have a title page and table of contents, but needed to start page numbers on the third page.
Thank you very much.
Thanks thanks thanks thanks and lastly thanks....great!!!!!
Thank you so much. page numbering has always been a headache for me. but you made it so simple. I'll just save this page as my favourite. Thanks a million.
Thanks a lot for the wonderful instructions. Regarding the total number of pages issue:
Using ALT+F9 to display the Field Codes rather than theField Results, modify your page of pages statement to be,
{ PAGE } of { = {NUMPAGES} - 1 }
This will require a special technique. Highlight the {NUMPAGES} field and Cut it (e.g. CTRL+X). Press CTRL+F9 to create a new field. Just typing thebraces will not suffice. With the cursor inside the field braces, type /=/ (equals) then paste (CTRL+V) the {NUMPAGES} field in. Type a /- / (minus) and a /1/ (one).
Your own fields may have extra number formatting involved. Press ALT+F9 again to toggle back to the /Field Results/, highlight the fields or press CTRL+A (/select all/) and press F9 to /update fields/.

Thanks a lot
THANK YOU! ...The only tutorial that i could understand :) brilliant. You'd think something like that would be easy to do, why do they make it sooo complicated?!
thanks again
works wonders! thanks!!
Thanks for this. Still needed to number first section. This should be easier!!!!!! Microsoft pull yer finger out!!
Step 7 -remember if you're wanting to start your page numbering from 1: make sure you click the '1' in the field, because it will automatically be highlighted -and it won't do what you want it to do if you press Okay with it highlighted.
Thanks a LOT DUDE!!!!...keep doin good work!!
Nicely done. Now I can look fairly adept in front of my students tomorrow as I teach Word.
didnt work for me :(
Got it... Thank you very much :-)
You are the best! As simple as it is, I've been screwing around with this since 2007...Success finally-thank you. I'll be doing less cursing now.
Thankyou! It helped so much!
life saver.. :)
Thank you for fantastic instuctions!
thank you very much..
THIS ONLY NUMBERED MY FIRST PAGE...WASTE FO TIME!
Thanks a lot, good instruction for me.
Thank You very Much,MS Word made it hard and you made it possible
badass
Cheers! Never would have figured that out.
Thank you, thank you, thank you! Oh for the days of Word 2003!
Perfect. This one works! Thank you
On Word 2007, I followed these instructions to the "T" ... but what I got was page numbers on all of my ODD pages, but none on my EVEN pages.
What did I do wrong?
By far the easiest answer is from George. Looks like the key is to learn a few variables so that you can ignore the menus and just do what you want. Terrific tip.
Awesome job! Thank you!
Simple and clear explanation.I finally got it right.
Thankyou so much.
Thanks a lot
Really benefit..... thanks a lot
Although I appreciate your clear ability to take a user step by step, your guide did not work for my document.
REALLY A GREAT TUTORIAL...MANY MANY THANKS ..I JUST NEEDED THIS
